Winter Poem

Melons

Melons ripen in a winter field,

September peaches carefully canned –

Below, the blue sea

Calm and welcoming

Gives me pause –

Gives me peace.

I can leave the glimmering light

And go back to what I thought was real

Or, I can stay here, and weave

Grapevines into the braids

My never-born daughter

Would have worn –

Hoping I can plant

Spring peas beside

My neighbor’s fence;

And forget who I am,

And who I was to become.

These are scary times. Prepare yourself to take a stand for what is right. God damn it, just be kind!
