Night Prayer

nj turnpike sunset

It’s hands-down bedtime,
And despite complete exhaustion,
I fight to stay awake
Because I’m
afraid of the dark —

Afraid of the ghosts who
followed s
ilently from
Carteret to Clearwater

And are presently sitting
Inside my head,
Their h
eels resting on
The back of my eyes,
Waiting.

I will offer them drinks
From my parent’s pink kitchen
As the sun sets across
the backyard fences
And the NJ Turnpike,

Where the cars and trucks
Roll on, forever and ever,
Amen.

These are scary times. Prepare yourself to take a stand for what is right. God damn it, just be kind!

  1. I used to be afraid of my ghosts but after their third appearance I recognized them and they don’t scare me anymore. I think that my healing came when I realized that if I wasn’t afraid I could not be hurt. Now it seems that facing fear is much easier when all you have to do is to put on the armor of God and pick up the sword of the Spirit. Then even death can not touch you. Your already living beyond it.
Your poems (like your lyrics) are always so descriptive! I live in them a life that’s just as real as the life I’m living.
Your talent is a blessing. Thank you for the prayer.
