The Distant Mirror of Time

Degas

Remember
in stages –

There, the ocean spray
on the jetty
halo’ed by the sun –

Here, a room
in a house that is
no more.

These unfamiliar
memories might
belong to
someone else —
this insatiable longing
that handcuffs
the moment
to a steam radiator
somewhere in a city
that boasts two Orions
In its night sky.

Remember
in stages –

Here, a piano ringed
by ghostly ballerinas
in whispering tulle,

There, an arbor
by the lake
With children
You’ve never met

Disappearing

one by one

In time.
